Whether the issue is one of jobs, education, health care, or the environment, Americans across the nation face an uncertain future. In Michigan, once a shining star of the American automotive industry, the challenges are particularly stark and top of mind for voters as the 2018 governor’s race approaches. Joining us to talk about the choices Michigan must face, and why they are not unlike those we face in California, is one of the state's rising democratic candidates, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
If elected, El-Sayed, at 32, will be the youngest governor of any state since Arkansas elected Bill Clinton in 1978, and he will be the first Muslim governor in the United States. He brings a unique perspective to government leadership as the former Health Commissioner for the City of Detroit, where he rebuilt the Health Department following the city’s bankruptcy in 2012. His personal story, which he will also share, is that of an immigrant family and one that is quintessentially about American identity. As an Egyptian-American, his candidacy is a historic one and one which challenges the politics of fear and hatred.
SPEAKER:
Abdul El-Sayed
Candidate for Governor, State of Michigan
MODERATOR:
