In the Rift Valley of western Kenya, most rural children have not had the opportunity to go to school as the schools are usually in larger towns or families lack the resources to buy supplies and uniforms. The Kilgoris Project is a nonprofit organization that has partnered with families in the Maasai village of Kilgoris, Kenya to build and support schools in that area. It funded its first preschool in 2004 and has since expanded to support four preschools and two primary schools, educating over 600 children. The Project also provides meals, clean water and basic medical care for the children. The schools generate income through a tea farm and women's co-op that employ local families.

Two years ago, The Kilgoris Project introduced e-readers as a way to provide books to students. Since then reading levels and test scores have improved significantly because of students' increased access to books. The Project collaborated with the organization Worldreader and with Kenyan publishers to digitize Kenyan books in both English and Kiswahili.

Jon McCormack will discuss how The Kilgoris Project has succeeded through partnership with Maasai families, and will share photographs from the Kilgoris schools and community.
