Inside the Taliban

July 14 - 14, 2010

Jere Van Dyk, an author and current consultant for CBS News, joins the Council to discuss his new book, Captive: My Time as a Prisoner of the Taliban. Van Dyk received a first hand look at the Taliban when he was taken captive for 45 days in western Pakistan in 2008. With over 30 years experience working in the region, Van Dyk describes in detail the mental universe of the Taliban fighters he encountered and explores a society where the prospect of death is ever present. His depictions of the grim realities of life in Afghanistan offer insight into the Taliban's recent transformation from an al Qaeda network to an organization bargaining for a legitimate place in the Karzai government. Van Dyk is the author of In Afghanistan: An American Odyssey, and is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, CBS News and National Geographic. This event is co-sponsored by the Marines' Memorial Association.
