1991, the same year that India began an aggressive campaign of economic
liberalization, a slum in the heart of Mumbai called Annawadi was
established. It is an overcrowded settlement with 3,000 people squatting
on land owned by the international airport. The slum is just one part
of a story of modern India that is divided by class, religion and
gender.
