The World Affairs Council of Northern California, is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on international affairs, offers a forum where diverse audiences engage in dialogue that informs their actions. In more than 100 programs a year, policy makers, business executives, philanthropists, academics, civic leaders and an attentive public join in the Council’s programs to listen, learn, discuss and debate.  

In addition, the Global Philanthropy Forum, a project of the Council, aims to build a community of donors and social investors committed to international causes and to inform, enable and enhance the strategic nature of their giving.

The Council is a nonprofit organization with an annual budget of approximately $5 million and a professional staff of twenty-five.

EMPLOYMENT

Director of Development
The Director of Development works with the CEO and COO to develop the annual budget, create fundraising plans and implement the strategies to meet goals. The Director is a member of the management team of the World Affairs Council, and liaison to the Board’s development committees. The Director of Development reports to the COO and supervises one experienced individual giving professional, and co-manages a membership and annual fund manager. The individual in this position will also work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications, and the Director, Corporate Partnerships. The position requires a high level of interaction with board trustees, donors, and donor prospects as well as a leadership and coaching role within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Manage development team and build infrastructure to increase giving (individual, corporate, foundation) beyond its current annual level of $1.5 million;
•    Expand planned giving program;
•    Establish policies and procedures, and create an annual development plan with measurable outcomes to guide the activities of the development staff, management team, and trustee leadership. 
•    Lead annual fund campaign effort;
•    Identify prospects, conduct research and prepare background materials for the CEO, COO, Board Chair and other trustees to support cultivation efforts and fundraising calls;
•    Manage and steward relationships with individual and foundation donors;
•    Write proposals, applications, and grant reports;
•    Develop strategy for online and print collateral to attract and retain donors and work collaboratively with the Council’s marketing and communications team to develop and produce materials.
•    Oversee planning and management of the annual awards dinner, other special events, and donor recognition activities;
•    Work with the Director, Corporate Partnerships to build and strengthen relationships in the business community and to develop programming series opportunities for corporate funders;
•    Ensure that the fundraising database (Common Ground) and other tracking systems are properly managed and current.

Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree, and 7+ years experience including a demonstrated record of fundraising successes with individual, corporate, and foundation gifts;
•    Current knowledge of fundraising trends;
•    Comfort with new technology and social media;
•    Working knowledge of contact management database systems;
•    Experience working with philanthropic and corporate leaders;
•    Strong management and coaching skills;
•    Excellent interpersonal skills;
•    Excellent writing and presentation skills; and
•    Organized and detail-oriented.

Webmaster (Temporary Position)
The Webmaster has overall responsibility for ensuring that Council’s online marketing efforts – consisting primarily of the web sites, online content, and email content – effectively meet the marketing and branding objectives of the Council and its programs. 

This position will report to the Director of Marketing for the World Affairs Council.  This position will work closely with members of the marketing and membership teams for the Council, supporting a range of programs, projects and constituents.

The Webmaster manages the content of the organizations’ websites, monitors web and email marketing efforts through web trends and email tracking software and provides timely informative reporting.  The ideal candidate will thrive in an atmosphere of growth and experimentation and will enjoy staying up to date on latest technologies, tools and best practices for email marketing, web design and structure, and online content dissemination.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Update, create and maintain web content: specifically publishing pages, copyediting, fixing links, and enhancing page layouts
•    Manage non-HTML documents (PDF or Word files)
•    Create regular, compelling HTML email campaigns to include A/B testing and deliverability analysis
•    Provide regular tracking reports and summaries for website traffic and statistics, email trends and social media activities
•    Assist in maintaining overall structure of site directories and files; updates site navigation and file structure as appropriate
•    Provide design support as needed for such online marketing elements as landing pages and banners, as well as printed collateral as required

Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
•    3+ years of related experience in online marketing and communications
•    Experience in web production and CMS elements of web site development including SEO, Adwords, Google Analytics and content testing
•    Proficiency in HTML
•    Experience with email production and distribution processes including SPAM issues and regulations
•    Ability to collaborate and work well with cross-departmental teams
•    Ability to multi-task and stay organized
•    An ongoing commitment to upgrading skills and acquiring new technical knowledge
•    Strong attention to detail and to the overall quality of information
•    Self-starter with creative problem-solving skills for maximizing effectiveness and efficiency
•    Excellent written and verbal communications skills, proof-reading and editing
•    Experience with Convio, Wordpress, Photoshop, and Illustrator a plus

INTERNSHIPS

The World Affairs Council of Northern California is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization dedicated to engaging the public in the exploration of issues and opportunities that transcend borders.

Internships are unpaid, but interns are reimbursed for their travel expenses. Intern supervisors can authorize academic credit.

Interns are welcome to attend Council forums and other standard events free of charge, and are given one-year memberships following the successful completion of the internship.


Audio Video Internship

 The World Affairs Council of Northern California is seeking a highly motivated intern to support its audio and video production. The potential intern should have previous audio-video production experience either through internships or college coursework. This internship would best suit Digital Media, Film and Video students or similar. This is a great internship for students interested in hands-on audio and video production.
 
Responsibilities include:
•    Recording audio and video
•    Screening/logging/transcribing/editing footage
•    Providing post-production support
•    Publishing podcasts and updating iTunes RSS feed
•    Cataloging archival digital media
•    Attending cross functional team meetings
•    Brainstorming and assisting for online video initiatives
•    Researching trends in multiplatform content
•    Performing administrative tasks in support of the Marketing and Communications team, as necessary
 
Qualifications:
•    Knowledge and experience with various digital video camera, lighting and sound techniques
•    Ability to work efficiently and creatively to produce high quality video products in a fast-paced environment
•    Proficient in Final Cut Pro, Motion, Compressor, Photoshop, and Audacity
•    Experience shooting and editing high-definition video for the web
•    Familiarity with adding audio video content to online platforms (YouTube, vimeo, iTunes, blogs, etc)
•    Excellent writing skills
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
•    Passion for international politics and foreign affairs a plus

Hours: 15 – 20 hours per week with a minimum of two months commitment. Start date ASAP; end date in mid to late August.

Global Philanthropy Forum Social Media Intern

The Global Philanthropy Forum seeks a part-time social media and digital communications intern.  The intern will work closely with the Membership Officer and Vice President of External Affairs to maintain and develop GPF’s digital communication assets. 

Responsibilities include:
•    Maintain Social Media Site: Source content and write posts for GPF’s social media sites. Monitor and respond to followers and fans. Stay abreast on digital communications best practices and emerging trends.
•    Website Updates: Regularly update resources page, digital collateral, website links and other relevant information as needed.
•    Content and Video Database: Catalog and tag existing digital content and video assets in preparation for new deployment.

Qualifications:
•    Excellent attention to detail
•    Strong organizational skill and ability to prioritize tasks
•    Strong proofreading and editing skills
•    Excellent judgment
•    Experience in social media
•    Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and high comfort level with databases, websites, and learning new computer applications
•    Exceptional customer service skills
•    Commitment to confidentiality and non-disclosure of private information
•    Ability to take initiative and work independently is a plus
•    High energy, positive and creative attitude
•    Ability to lift up to 30 lbs
